Yale University Standing Column Well Investigation

Yale University has had issues with their Kroon Hall Standing Column Well (SCW) system since shortly after the system was constructed back in 2008. These issues have resulted in the complete failure of the well system. RENU teamed with LFG Inc (Norwalk, CT) and Sima Drilling (Cheshire, CT) to perform a thorough investigation of well side system issues. The investigation identified that a combination of issues including; poor groundwater yield, bacteriological fouling, well flow imbalances due to open well elevation differences and vacuums, and well clogging from geologic erosion are all contributing to the well failures. The University is now evaluating the risks and costs to convert the SCW system to closed loop geothermal.
